Then, we are facing one of the biggest problems of the current food system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to data from the Catalan Ministry of Climate Action, Food and the Rural Agenda, <strong>each person in Catalonia wastes 35 kg of food a year<\/strong>, representing 7% of the food they buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/menjaactuaimpacta.org\/recursos\/eat-life-el-cost-dels-aliments-que-es-malbaraten\/\">much food wastage occurs at the home and catering level<\/a><\/strong>, it also affects other stages of the food chain: production in the field and initial distribution, processing and packaging in factories, and central distribution and retailing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below we share <strong>seven documentaries that deal with this issue <\/strong>from different perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:#7bdcb5\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1. JUST EAT IT: A FOOD WASTE STORY (2014)<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/AI7GE5LWqFZnZtRbxK0KMCUX7bSbIPumGGCSDz9o-AKtv4NIhFDM0RIrnFMKpqnYSDFjleCeXrP_T5J_PmaeWVDY4fkFSV9vs2YUk8mor2J04I2BexkkOWLcieteXVr2qWpUbYT7bIUr_7-qnwk9BnM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>How can we throw almost 50% of our food away? This is the question asked by Jen and Grant, two American citizens, before setting themselves a <strong>major challenge: to feed themselves for a few months on food that has been rejected and wasted<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The documentary film <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/foodwastemovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story<\/em><\/a><\/strong> tells the story of a couple who rescues food destined for the garbage bin, showing that it is in optimal condition for consumption. THE VALUE OF FOOD (2015)<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/RXviiejJKC1myQduhbswMqLO69MyASTFJvORvtXy9kuKxTe_ubDKhPO0eUd2rNilhsPPgbd6gNDEQAecFqaGLncILBmiMYzJHATZmq8M382qcGS6dKwS1Cz9caO95rMmesvf1tXpoWvO2KyfECLJaU8\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015 the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.cat\/en\/who-are-we\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ENT Foundation<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalistesgirona.org\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Girona Naturalists Association<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/espaiambiental.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Espai Ambiental <\/a><\/strong>promoted the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elvalordelsaliments.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Value of Food<\/a><\/strong> campaign. The initiative aimed at bringing the problem of food wastage to light, and included several activities and awareness-raising actions, and had several activities and awareness-raising actions, among them the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rQT3_S1dBD0&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">short documentary <strong><em>El valor dels aliments<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/strong> (<em>The Value of Food<\/em>, in Catalan).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is an explanatory video on food waste, realised with the collaboration of different agents related to the problem. It discusses, among other things, aspects of the<strong> loss of the environmental, cultural and economic value of food<\/strong>, the subsequent treatment of waste, and the importance of the type of consumption we make as a decisive point in reducing waste. While millions of people go hungry, we throw away millions of tons of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In<a href=\"Con la comida no se juega\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f1WHqQqYXi4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Salvados: Con la comida no se juega<\/strong><\/a><\/em> [<em>Saved: You Don&#8217;t Play Around with Food<\/em>, in Spanish], journalist Jordi \u00c9vole presents the different visions of this problem through the testimonies of producers, businessmen, supermarket employees and members of parliament. How many kilos of food are wasted from the beginning of the food chain until it reaches our plates? What is the difference between food waste and food loss? It was one of the first documentaries that, with Austria at its centre, dealt with issues such as the <strong>long journey that food makes<\/strong> to reach the country where it is finally consumed or the large amount of food that is discarded or thrown away because it does not meet a series of <strong>aesthetic standards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fishermen, farmers, transporters, and big businessmen are all key players in the circulation of food and the development of problems such as food wastage, deforestation and the globalisation of the food industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zXPRUBa7RsM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">We Feed the World<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>is also about the coexistence of scarcity and abundance. The documentary <strong><em>Tus desperdicios y otros manjares<\/em><\/strong> [<em>Your Waste and Other Delicacies<\/em>, in Spanish] aims at making us reflect on how our <strong>eating habits<\/strong> and the <strong>consumerist society<\/strong> in which we currently live are, in part, the cause of the phenomenon of food waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to waste, food production is the main cause of deforestation and loss of habitat, biodiversity and water.
