Despite the diversity of legumes grown in almost every comarca, Catalonia imports large quantities of pulses annually. Paradoxical, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"el-viatge-dels-cigrons\"><strong>THE JOURNEY OF THE CHICKPEAS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tierra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/alimentos_kilometricos_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Alimentos Kilom\u00e9tricos<\/strong><\/a> [Kilometric Food] report, the <strong>mean distance between chickpea farmers and consumers <\/strong>is nothing short of <strong>7,500 km.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same report states that such a trip is transoceanic and completely dispensable since the produce was already grown in Catalonia <strong>some 40 years ago<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the impact of chickpea production on the local agricultural fabric of countries such as Mexico, one of Spain&#8217;s main chickpea providers, is devastating. <strong>The working conditions of people working in chickpea fields are very precarious<\/strong>. According to the Mexican <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.www.inegi.org.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI)<\/a><\/strong>, their average wage is <strong>less than the equivalent of 1 \u20ac per hour<\/strong> worked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can you do to change this tendency?<\/strong> The answer is very clear: <strong>eat local pulses!<\/strong> As the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/canalsalut.gencat.cat\/ca\/vida-saludable\/alimentacio\/aliments\/llegums\/\">Health Channel<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canalsalut.gencat.cat\/ca\/vida-saludable\/alimentacio\/aliments\/llegums\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong> of the Generalitat de Catalunya<\/strong><\/a> reports, there are many varieties of each type of legume, with different sizes, textures and flavours, which are often linked to specific regions. <strong>Below we list some of them:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"10-varietats-de-llegums-locals\"><strong>10 LOCAL VARIETIES OF PULSES<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-genially wp-block-embed-genially\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"EN_10_Llegums_Proximitat\" frameborder='0' width='1200' height='675' src='https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/646f4ad38683b40013078842#?secret=JN44SWJNJc' data-secret='JN44SWJNJc' scrolling='yes'><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Santa Pau beans (Garrotxa)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Pardina <\/em>lentil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beans from Castellfollit del Boix (Bages)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Ganxet <\/em>bean from Vall\u00e8s<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>L&#8217;Anoia little chickpea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Garrofal <\/em>pea from Llavaneres<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Ull ros<\/em> beans (Pla de l\u2019Estany and l\u2019Empord\u00e0)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orist\u00e0 chickpea (Osona)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bergued\u00e0 black pea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carob fruit from Baix Pened\u00e8s, Baix Camp, Tarragon\u00e8s, Baix Ebre, Montsi\u00e0, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"beneficis-de-consumir-llegums\"><strong>BENEFITS OF EATING LEGUMES<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ok, but <strong>why is eating pulses a good thing?<\/strong> What are the benefits for human and planetary health? How many times a week should we eat pulses? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/canalsalut.gencat.cat\/ca\/vida-saludable\/alimentacio\/els_aliments\/llegums\/#bloc1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health Channel of the Generalitat de Catalunya<\/a><\/strong>, pulses have a <strong>high fibre content<\/strong> that provides a feeling of satiety and facilitates intestinal transit. In addition, <strong>regular consumption of pulses<\/strong> lowers cholesterol, triglycerides, and some cancers and promotes cardiovascular health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for their nutritional value, pulses contain <strong>beneficial nutrients<\/strong> such as fibre, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, proteins and carbohydrates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Focusing on the <strong>quantity and quality of protein<\/strong>, they are ideal substitutes for meat. For example, 100 grams of dried lentils contain 24 grams of protein, while 100 grams of beef fillet or chicken breast provide 20 grams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, <strong>pulses are gluten-free<\/strong>, making them suitable for people with coeliac disease.
