{"id":9159,"date":"2023-06-21T16:33:26","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T14:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/planetary-diet-or-how-to-eat-taking-care-of-the-planet\/"},"modified":"2023-08-09T17:54:30","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T15:54:30","slug":"planetary-diet-or-how-to-eat-taking-care-of-the-planet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/en\/planetary-diet-or-how-to-eat-taking-care-of-the-planet\/","title":{"rendered":"Planetary diet or how to eat taking care of the planet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On the occasion of the Sustainable Gastronomy Day on 18 June, we take a look at planetary diet and offer tools and tips for learning about this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What would you say is the healthiest diet for people and the planet? <strong>The dominant diet, the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/sustainability\/plate-and-planet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Western Pattern Diet (WPD)<\/a> -poor in vegetables and rich in animal protein, ultra-processed food, sugar and salt- together with <strong>sedentarism<\/strong> and an <strong>unsustainable agricultural system are<\/strong> causing dramatic damage to the planet and are the cause of 11 million human deaths yearly, <a href=\"https:\/\/eatforum.org\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EAT-Lancet_Commission_Summary_Report_Spanish.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a study published in The Lancet,<\/a> by 37 experts from 16 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These scientists aimed to answer the question &#8216;<strong>Can we feed 10 billion people with a sustainable diet within the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/en\/planetary-boundaries-what-will-happen-in-2050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">planetary boundaries<\/a><strong>?<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>The answer was an emphatic yes<\/strong>. This is possible only if everybody adopts the so-called <strong>planetary diet<\/strong>: reducing animal protein intake by half and doubling vegetable, pulses and nuts consumption. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to this scientific commission&#8217;s proposal, adopting the planetary diet at a general scale would reduce deaths due to malnutrition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/es\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/noncommunicable-diseases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">non-communicable diseases<\/a>, which are related to overweight, obesity and the lack of physical activity, and <strong>include chronic health problems<\/strong> such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, according to FAO, the food system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/es\/item\/1379490\/icode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is responsible for 1\/3 of the emissions of greenhouse gases<\/a> (GHG). If everybody followed the planetary diet put forth by the scientific commission, <strong>there would be a reduction in GHG emissions<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>planetary diet<\/strong> is similar to what is popularly known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/eatforum.org\/eat-lancet-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flexitarian diet<\/a>, which is <strong>mainly based on<\/strong> <strong>foods of plant origin<\/strong> (vegetables, fruit, whole cereals, pulses and nuts) but can occasionally include <strong>a modicum of fish and meat (preferably white meat) and dairies<\/strong>. According to the study, we should also reduce the consumption of starchy vegetables (especially potatoes and other tubercules, and corn). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The notion that we can contribute to fighting climate crisis through our diet is ever more extended<\/strong> and some authors as the dietitian nutritionist and populariser Aitor S\u00e1nchez emphasise the idea. S\u00e1nchez has written four books on sustainable healthy eating, the last one being <em>Your diet can save the planet<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt; Watch <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/menjaactuaimpacta.org\/recursos\/la-teva-dieta-pot-salvar-el-planeta-aitor-sanchez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the talk Aitor S\u00e1nchez gave at Fundesplai<\/a><\/strong> about these topics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The planetary diet was also exemplified graphically by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eatforum.org\/eat-lancet-commission\/the-planetary-health-diet-and-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EAT-Lancet Commission Food Anthropocene<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"583\" src=\"https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Plat_Lancet-2-1024x583.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11071\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Plat_Lancet-2-1024x583.png 1024w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Plat_Lancet-2-878x500.png 878w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Plat_Lancet-2-768x437.png 768w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Plat_Lancet-2-1536x875.png 1536w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Plat_Lancet-2-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Plat_Lancet-2-500x285.png 500w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Plat_Lancet-2.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Adapted from <a href=\"https:\/\/eatforum.org\/eat-lancet-commission\/the-planetary-health-diet-and-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EAT-Lancet<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt; Check the report <a href=\"https:\/\/eatforum.org\/content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EAT-Lancet_Commission_Summary_Report_Spanish.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Healthy diets from sustainable food systems<\/a> by the EAT-Lancet Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHAT FOODS SHOULD WE REDUCE?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>UNHEALTHY FOODS<\/strong>: reduce the consumption of food clearly linked to higher risks of having diseases and to a higher environmental impact: less salt, sugar, red meat, processed meat and <a href=\"https:\/\/canalsalut.gencat.cat\/ca\/vida-saludable\/alimentacio\/petits-canvis-per-menjar-millor\/Menys\/Aliments-ultraprocessats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ultra-processed foods<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ANIMAL PROTEIN: <\/strong>reducing meat and other kinds of animal protein allows for improving people&#8217;s health, fighting climate emergency, preventing deforestation, contributing to animal welfare, etc. Learn more about this topic in <a href=\"https:\/\/menjaactuaimpacta.org\/recursos\/7-raons-reduir-consum-carn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201c7 raons per a reduir el consum de carn\u201d <\/a>(in Catalan).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHAT FOODS SHOULD WE PROMOTE?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/salutpublica.gencat.cat\/ca\/ambits\/promocio_salut\/alimentacio_saludable\/Publicacions\/Alimentacio-saludable-per-a-tothom\/Petits-canvis-per-menjar-millor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public Health Agency of Catalonia<\/a> provides recommendations very similar to those in the planetary diet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES<\/strong>: We need to increase the intake of those foods we consume less than recommended: more fruit and vegetables, pulses and nuts.  And combine them with an active life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>LOCAL SEASONAL AND WHOLE: <\/strong>When facing similar alternatives, we should prioritise the healthiest; when possible choose whole, local and seasonal food. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL (EVOO), AND WATER FOR DRINKING: <\/strong>when possible, always choose EVOO and drink water (reducing or eliminating the consumption of sugared or alcoholic beverages).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us review the mean consumption of these foods recommended by the Public Health Agency: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>FRUIT<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_-FRUITA-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_-FRUITA-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_-FRUITA-889x500.jpg 889w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_-FRUITA-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_-FRUITA-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_-FRUITA-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_-FRUITA-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_-FRUITA.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recommended intake of fruit is a minimum of three pieces a day. Presently, the mean consumption of vegetables is about 1\/2 a portion a day, much less than recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PULSES<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_Llegums-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_Llegums-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_Llegums-889x500.jpg 889w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_Llegums-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_Llegums-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_Llegums-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_Llegums-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/eat-life.fundesplai.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/EN_Llegums.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pulses are very beneficial for people&#8217;s and planetary health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As explained in the <a href=\"https:\/\/canalsalut.gencat.cat\/ca\/vida-saludable\/alimentacio\/els_aliments\/llegums\/#bloc1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health Channel of the Generalitat de Catalunya<\/a>, legumes have a high fibre content, which provides a feeling of satiety and facilitates gut transit. In addition, regular consumption of pulses lowers cholesterol, triglycerides, some types of cancer and promotes cardiovascular health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for their nutritional value, pulses contain beneficial nutrients such as fibre, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, proteins and carbohydrates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for their sustainability, pulses offer a handful of environmental benefits: <strong>they enhance agro-biodiversity and landscape diversity; improve soil fertility and agricultural lands productivity; their production generates few emissions<\/strong> of GHG compared to other protein rich foods<strong> and they need much less water<\/strong> to produce 1 kg of pulses than 1 kg of animal protein.
